Implant-Supported Dentures in Apopka, FL
Traditional dentures can restore a full smile, but many denture wearers deal with slipping, clicking, sore spots and trouble eating the foods they love. Implant-supported dentures solve many of these problems by anchoring your denture to dental implants placed in the jawbone. At Apopka Smiles, our dentist combines our dental implant and denture services to help patients get a more stable, confident smile.
What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
A dental implant is a small titanium post that is inserted under the gum and into the bone of the upper or lower jaw. Over the following 2 to 4 months, the implant and bone fuse together, creating a strong anchor. With implant-supported dentures, several implants are placed along the jaw and a full arch of replacement teeth attaches to them.
Depending on your needs, the denture may snap on and off the implants for cleaning, or it may be fixed in place.
Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures
- Stability. Dentures anchored to implants won't slip or shift when you talk, laugh or eat.
- Better chewing. A secure denture lets you eat a wider variety of foods with confidence.
- Helps preserve the jawbone. Implants help decrease the possibility of bone loss that commonly happens after teeth are lost.
- Comfort. Less movement means fewer sore spots on the gums.
- Natural look. Your new teeth are designed to look like a natural, healthy smile.
Who Is a Candidate?
Implant-supported dentures may be right for you if you are missing most or all of your teeth in one or both jaws, are unhappy with loose traditional dentures, or have teeth that need to be removed. Just about everyone can be an implant candidate thanks to advances in dental technology. Exceptions usually involve chronic illnesses, heart disease or severe osteoporosis. Our dentist will review your health history and use Panorex imaging to evaluate your jawbone.
The Treatment Process
- Consultation and planning. We review your goals, take X-rays and impressions, and create a treatment plan.
- Extractions, if needed. Any remaining failing teeth are removed. See our Multiple Tooth Extractions and Extraction Site Preservation pages.
- Implant placement. Implants are placed after a local anesthetic is administered.
- Healing. The implants fuse with the bone over the following months.
- Final denture. Your custom denture is attached to the implants.
