Dental Emergency on a Weekend in Apopka? What to Do Until We Open

Tooth pain has a way of starting on a Friday night. Apopka Smiles is open Monday to Thursday, 8 AM to 4 PM, and Friday, 8 AM to 2 PM, and we are closed on weekends. Here is how to tell what can wait, what cannot, and how to get seen quickly once we open.

Go to the ER now if you have

  • Swelling in your face or neck that is spreading
  • Trouble breathing or swallowing
  • A high fever with tooth or jaw swelling
  • Bleeding that will not stop after 15 minutes of firm pressure
  • A jaw injury or a hard blow to the face

These can be serious. Do not wait for a dental office to open.

Problems that can usually wait until we open

  • A toothache you can manage with over-the-counter pain relief
  • A small chip or a cracked tooth that is not bleeding
  • A lost filling or crown
  • A broken denture
  • Sore gums or a food particle stuck between teeth

How to stay comfortable until Monday

  • Toothache: rinse with warm salt water, gently floss to remove stuck food, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the label, if it is safe for you. Do not put aspirin directly on the gum.
  • Swelling (not spreading): a cold compress on the outside of the cheek, 15 to 20 minutes at a time.
  • Chipped or broken tooth: save the pieces, rinse, and cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum or dental wax.
  • Lost crown: keep it safe and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side.
  • Knocked-out adult tooth: this one is time-sensitive. Hold the tooth by the top, rinse it gently, keep it in milk or inside your cheek, and get care right away.

How to get seen first on Monday

  1. Call (407) 788-6888 as soon as we open at 8 AM.
  2. Tell us what happened, when it started and how bad the pain is.
  3. Have your insurance card ready, or fill out our new patient forms online over the weekend if you are new.

We keep time for dental emergencies during office hours. See Emergency Dentistry in Apopka for the problems we treat.

Preventing the next weekend emergency

Most "sudden" emergencies start as small problems: a cavity that grows, a cracked filling, or gum infection. Regular cleanings and exams catch these early. Athletes should wear a mouth guard, and people who grind their teeth should ask about a night guard.
